Hogwarts, a Modern History
Following the second rise and fall of the ‘Dark Lord’ Tom Marvolo Riddle, better known as Voldemort and often referred to as ‘He-who-Must-not-be-Name’ and ‘You-Know-Who’, Hogwarts underwent rebuilding. The restored school was re-opened for enrollment two years after the Battle of Hogwarts, on May 2, 2000. During the two years the school was closed for repairs some parents chose to send their children abroad to other wizardry schools in Europe and even on other continents. However, most of them entered into a Ministry run ‘home-schooling’ program, during which Hogwarts teachers and Ministry officials worked together to create mini ‘schooling stations’ in easy access locations for prior students and muggle-born witches and wizards of the correct age.
Upon the re-opening of the school students flooded in and many of them were ecstatic at a new or returning favorite experience set; from the sorting ceremony to the speeches, parties, vacations and classes, from lazy days sitting by the Black Lake to throwing snowballs at their least favorite teachers and classmates, from the morning owl post to the last lights-out call. The school fell back into a pattern, but almost none of the teachers were the same, most of them having chosen to retire after seeing their beloved school back on its feet.
With the school back on its feet new teachers made new rules, new classes started, and new places were found. The Ministry continued to meddle in school affairs for the next three years until everyone put their foot down. With Ministry presence mostly removed from the school things returned to normal: O.W.L.s at the fifth year, N.E.W.T.’s at the seventh, class after class, homework most evenings, and pranksters and rule breakers who raised the ire of the teachers. The variety of teachers and students is what has made Hogwarts into Hogwarts, and it’s the variety that sends year after year of students to school.
