It was a more boring than average Saturday and Shaylyn was in the mood for some fun. She wasn’t quite sure what to do, however and was hanging upside down off the edge of her bed trying to come up with something interesting to do. Nothing seemed like the right thing to get her out of this awkwardly bored mood but for a bit she was amusing herself by bouncing a rubber ball that she discovered under her bed, in her upside down state and actually attempting to catch it. It wasn’t the most fun thing to do, but at least she was doing something. Bouncing rubber balls can only be amusing for so long unfortunately, and after a couple of minutes, she was again bored. Sitting up, she looked out the window of Ravenclaw Tower and an idea came to her: Why not go explore the forest? Shaylyn was well aware that it was called the “Forbidden Forest” and there was probably some reasoning behind that name, but in the hopes of curing her boredom she decided to take her chances. Making her way down, no one noticed (or asked) where she was heading, although she usually didn’t talk to people so it wasn’t a big shocker that no one cared. Upon arriving, she got nervous; what if she got caught. She would get in trouble. Or what if there was some big scary creature in there that she didn’t know how to handle. Then what? She would die, that’s what. Shaylyn wasn’t the bravest person alive. As a matter of fact, she was actually probably one of the biggest chickens that she knew. She was afraid of almost everything and her father and brother always made fun of her for it. For some reason right now, she was more afraid of getting caught then she was about any creatures. Shay looked over her shoulder to make sure no one was watching her and stepped forward a couple of feet. It was then, that she decided that she was too chicken and didn’t want to go in. The farthest she could go was the very edge, where she decided to sit down and lean against a tree. Usually, she was all for adventure, and usually she wouldn’t have a problem with venturing into a dark forest but right now, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. Who would be watching her though, was her question. It wasn’t like she was actually breaking any rules right now. She was sitting, and she was pretty sure there was no rule against that. Closing her eyes and leaning her head back, onto the tree, she took a deep breath. She was just being paranoid, nothing was watching her…she hoped. “Row, Row, Row! AROWWW!” Tabby followed her dogs easily as they chased rabbits near the edge of the forest, which she was patrolling for students. Chasm and Abyss, twin brown brindled boxers, had chased a wildcat up a tree and were barking at it to come down. Lynd, a sleek greyhound in a hand knit sweater pranced closer to her masters’ side and three other dogs chased around, making noise and having fun being outside in the sun again. Tabby had felt those malicious eyes on her back when she’d first entered the forest, but the many dogs, or perhaps the crossbow at her waist, kept whatever it was at bay. Or perhaps it was just too cautious to enter the edge of the forest. It had stopped after a good half hour of patrol, in which she’d gotten about a third of the way around the edge.
Chasm and Abyss were the first to notice something and they raced toward the very edge of the forest, sounding their echoing ‘Intruder!’ barks, Lynd stayed by Tabby’s side as the professor turned to lope after her pack of dogs that were baying that someone was in the forest. They responded that way to anyone, student or professor so she wasn’t too worried about it. As she approached the edge, she felt watched again, the closer she got to the edge the worse the feeling became. She spotted a giant paw-print, just to the side of the path. Her cauldron would have fit easily in one of the toe prints, and one of the two massive dogs beds in her room would have fit in the main pad, with extra room for one of the smaller dogs. She whistled softly. The monster that left that would be huge.
“ROW! ROW! RAOW!” Chasm was getting impatient with her. She picked her feet up, moving from an easy jogging lope to a slow run. She reached the edge of the forest easily and saw a student there. She frowned, students weren’t supposed to be in the forest, not even the edges. True, she wasn’t even really as far in as some of the boundary trees, but still.
“You shouldn’t be here you know. Students aren’t allowed in the forest at all, not unless a professor has come with them for a task. Especially not now.” The dogs silenced and came running back to Tabby, tails wagging and ears perked. She put her hands down so that they could rub against them, or lick them, as they chose.
“Chasm, Gādo.” The boxer barked and bounded back, watching the forest with sharp brown eyes. Tabby offered her hand to Shaylyn, the younger woman’s named slipped from Tabby’s mind, but all students were part of her responsibility. She smiled at the girl as Chasm growled at the forest behind them. Abyss and most of the other dogs watched with him. He was the boss dog after Carthage, and Carthage was only the boss because Tabby backed the giant mastiff.

All was silent save for the sounds of nature for a few good minutes and Shaylyn was using this time to clear her head. She was listening to the wind in the trees, the distant sound of the lake’s waves on its shore, and dogs in the distance. Wait, dogs in the distance? Her eyes snapped open and she looked around her. Which direction were the dogs coming from? Were they coming this way? She leaned her head towards the forest and listened. They were definitely getting closer.
Shay wasn’t really sure what to do. Should she just sit there and hope they run past her; it wasn’t like she was breaking any rules as she wasn’t actually IN the forest. Her other idea was to get up and walk away right now. Maybe they hadn’t noticed her yet and she could just make her way back before anyone did. Yeah, that sounded like a good plan. Just as she was about to stand, however, she heard a very loud howl and a large dog made its way out of the forest. [pink]Uh oh…I’m caught. [/pink] She thought, rubbing her forehead gently with her hand. After a couple of seconds, another dog made its way out, followed by what looked to be a professor. What subject the professor taught was beyond her, but it had to be something she wasn’t taking (obviously).
[pink]I’m really sorry Professor, but in my defense, I wasn’t actually “in” the forest. I thought about it, but I never crossed over the boundary.[/pink] She hoped she didn’t sound like she was talking back, because that would have gotten her into more trouble than she might actually be in. Shaylyn would never talk back to a teacher; she was simply explaining her situation. Although, something the professor said did catch her attention. What did she mean “Especially not now?” Was there something out in the forest that wasn’t there before? Something big and dangerous that was bound to hurt people? Her curiousity got the best of her and she just had to ask. [pink] If you don’t mind me asking, what did you mean by “Especially not now”? What’s out there that I should know about?[/pink] She didn’t mean to put the professor on the spot, especially if it was something that students weren’t supposed to know, but technically, it was her fault for bringing it up.
Shaylyn took the Professor’s hand when she offered it to her, so as to be pulled up to standing with her. [pink]Your dogs are cute. [/pink] She said with a smile, holding her hand out to one of them. She just hoped it wouldn’t bite her hand off.

“Mmmmhmmm… Boundary is the tree line little miss. You might not be across it but in light of recent situations close enough to touch might be too close.” Tabby smiled. She had no issues with students being curious and breaking rules. Heaven knows, if she’d gone to school here a rule would have been broken every hour and her house would always have been last. “As for what I meant by ‘especially not now’… Well… There’s something in the forest that managed to murder a unicorn mare. I’ve been fostering the foal since I found them both. Mr. Dedrian had to rescue some students from it the other day as well.” She didn’t lose her friendly demeanor. She’d been told no such thing as ‘don’t tell the students’, or if she had, rather conveniently she’d forgotten it. Lynd padded over and sniffed at the offered hand, licking it.
“Ah, them? My ragtag bunch of mama’s boys.” She chuckled. “I foster anything that comes my way without a family of its own; dogs, cats, students, magical creatures. I guess it comes from knowing what it’s like to feel alo-“ She broke off as Chasm and Abyss both started to bark at something in the forest.
“-nuh… I think we should continue this conversation elsewhere.” Tabby wrapped one arm lightly around Shaylyns shoulders and started to half lead, half drag the student elsewhere. “Dogs, shitagau!” The dogs followed, still keeping their eyes on the forest. Tabby didn’t slow her rather forced march until they were halfway across the lawns to the castle. Then she let go of Shaylyn and looked back toward the forest, sea green eyes searching as she hoped to catch maybe a glimpse of the creature she’d evaded a second time.
