"Wonder of wonders, the pitch is free." Ruby said out loud as she walked to the center of the playing field and dropped her bag. "Ok so the weather isn't ideal for practice, but still I expected there to be someone else out here. Ah well."
The Slytherin shrugged and shed her outer robe, muttering the trigger words that transfigured her skirt into pants as she pulled out first her skim board then a broomstick from her bag. The broom was sleek and modern looking. The logo on the blue-grey handle was in metallic black read 'Kestrel 2011'.
Leaving the broom laying next to her bag, Ruby ran her fingers over the edge of the skim board and made a few adjustments to the runes carved into the edge. Before she'd kept the board set to it's lowest flight ceiling, but now it was set to go as high as any of the brooms.
Stepping onto the hovering plank she pushed off and shot into the air with a whoop of glee.

Tabby had decided it was time to practice flying again. She did quite enjoy the rush of air going past her face and body, but she was also better when she was on the back of a thestrals or hippogriff or anything else with a mind of its own. She had selected a school broom, not owning a broom herself, and dragged it out to the pitch. Once there she paused and put on a set of ‘falling armor’ as she called it. In a quidditch game it would have done her nothing, but when falling from a great height, such as when she rode a hippogriff or a thestrals, it prevented all but the most serious of injuries, and those serious injuries were dulled down to mild bruises that might ache and throb for a week or so. Unless she landed wrong, but a wrong landing that resulted in broken bones couldn’t be changed by wearing armor or not wearing it, and she preferred her armor after her issue with the sphinx.
She mounted the broom and kicked up, floating out of the entry way and spotting Ruby. Unlike the student she was in no mood to be fancy or dangerous. She kept herself decently low and going slow, not feeling perfectly steady. She preferred the up and down rhythm of wing beats, the soft flutter of feathers or fur in the breeze, the reassuring thump of a heart below her and between her legs. She finally got up to the same level as Ruby was zooming around on and paused herself, hovering easily.
“Howdy Ruby!”

Unaware that Tabby had joined her int he air Ruby was junking juking in the air like she was evading bludgers and an opposing team. her face was set in a scowl as she pulled up sharply and let an imaginary quaffle fly at the middle hoop.
She was just reached the apex of her upward flight and was just beginning to fall backwards when Tabby called out. “Howdy Ruby!”
"Oh, Professor, Hi. I didn't realize you where there." the girl said as she regained control of her board and dropped back down to Tabby's altitude, without, hopefully, giving ehr teacher a heart attack. She looked windswept, and her cheeks where red from wind burn. But her grin was huge and full of joy. "I needed some time to think, and as I can't take a walk in the woods like I used to back home, flying's a decent Plan B to clear my head."
OOC: Who: Ruby Expecting: Tabby and Open. Plot: None really Notes: Ruby's babbling a little. Which is something I do when confronted with a teacher outside of school.

Tabby watched with mild amusement as Ruby dropped down to her altitude. She would have been more concerned if she wasn’t fond of taking the fast way down herself on frequent occasions. Ruby truly reminded her a little of herself as she would have been as a student, although perhaps a bit more talky. Then again she’d only really just been starting to talk again when she’d been Ruby’s age. She looked happy and Tabby figured that she, like most of the students who would be out here at this time of year, was at home on a broom… or a flying board in her case.
“No need to explain to me Ruby. I know how it is. Then again, you wouldn’t be allowed to walk in the woods even if there wasn’t a giant flesh eating monster hiding in there, because it’s not the only dangerous thing in the woods… I think.” She truly didn’t know if the monster had scared off most of the other dangerous creatures or if they were just hiding. “In any case, I’m just trying to get the hang of using a broom. I’m not too handy with these silly things, I much prefer being on the back of an animal. At least then if I fall and break something I have something to blame.” Her last words were joking, and anyone who knew her knew that she would never blame an animal for a mistake she made, like falling off and breaking her arm.

Spinning her board Ruby smirked a little. "Lions and tigers and bears, Oh my!" she sang before sobering up. "No worries Professor, I know my skill level. I'm not in a high enough weight class up to take on something that has you looking worried this far from the Forest."
"I can tell you something about improving your broom handling; Relax some. Would you be this tense around one of your animals? They can sense your unease, and in many ways so can the broom." the girl said takeing on a lecturing tone.
She flipped her board's nose towards the ground and plummeted. She held the move until she barely had the room to pull level to the ground. Skimming past her bag Ruby snatched her broom up and then hesitated. She'd yet to manage an in motion transfer without face planting.
/Better play it safe then./ she thought as she stopped her board and transferred to her broom. The Kestrel hummed between her thighs as she rose back up to rejoin Tabby. "Treat the broom like a Quad or Hex X beast. Don't show your fear, keep loose to react.

“Me! Worried? Not in this life time, Champ. Not by something with fur, feathers, or scales at least. I save my fear for humans and their machines.” She grinned and took the girls advice, as best as she could. It was much easier to be calm with an animal; you could focus on their heartbeat or their breathing. Animals, living things in general, were all about patterns. Find the pattern, focus on it, relax. She closed her eyes and felt for a pattern. There it was, the soft thrum of magic that made brooms, and other objects, fly. ‘ku-ku-ku-chu ku-ku-ku-chu…’ She focused, memorizing the pattern and letting her body take the same one. She was unaware as the broom began to rise again, much easier than it had before. It turned, and she shifted her weight with it. It sped up, and she leaned closer to the old wood. It flipped upside down…
And Tabbys eyes snapped open as she screamed in terror at being suspended upside down nearly two hundred feet from the ground. The moment was gone, and she was hugging the slender stick with all four limbs and would have set her teeth in it too if she could have managed such an acrobatic in mid-air.

Ruby's flight was slow and easy, paralleling Tabby from several yards away. She grinned as her teacher seemed to relax and get the feel of the broom quickly enough. And then Tabby flipped herself over and the screaming started. Ok so there was only one scream, but it seemed to continue in Ruby's head as she pulled one of her wands.
Wingardium Liviousa!" she barked aiming at Tabby. She felt the spell draw on her energies and wrap around the terrified teacher. "Ok, I got you. You're not gonna fall. I'm gonna fly under you and you're gonna lower yourself onto my broom behind me....

Tabby shook her head, limbs trembling in their death-lock embrace of the stick of wood with its twiggy back end. It didn’t help that the one she rode on didn’t have a place to put one’s feet, those having been broken off (probably by a bludger) years ago. She whimpered, feeling magic supporting her and knowing it wasn’t from the broom.
“I can do this. I-I… I just need a little help getting right-side up again.” She spoke through gritted teeth, the hair on her arms (and a number of other locations) standing straight up in fright. With a little effort she began to inch herself over, trusting Ruby to stop her from splattering on the ground if she screwed up too badly. Carefully she rocked herself side to side, until the broom flipped over and left her correctly suspended. She didn’t loosen her grip as she relocated her center of balance and started moving forward again. This time it was slow to move, but she found the beat of magic in it again. This time she kept her eyes open as she let that beat take her over. She allowed herself to circle, dropping lower slowly until she was level with the bottom tier of seats around the field. She felt much calmer down here.
